What are  the Properties of Helium? Definition of Helium
What is the definition of Helium? It is a colorless, odorless inert gaseous element occurring in natural gas and with radioactive ores.  It is less soluble in water than any other gas. The Physical and Chemical Properties are the characteristics of a substance, like Helium, which distinguishes it from any other substance. Most common substances exist as States of Matter as solids, liquids, gases and plasma. Refer to the article on Helium Element for additional information and facts about this substance.

Helium Properties - What are the Physical Properties of Helium?
What are the Physical Properties of Helium? The Physical properties of Helium are the characteristics that can be observed without changing the substance into another substance.

Physical properties are usually those that can be observed using our senses such as color, luster, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, density, hardness and odor. The Physical Properties of Helium are as follows:

  • Phase : Gas : When cooled it condenses to liquid helium. Liquid helium is the only element that does not solidify at normal pressure regardless of the temperature
  • Density : Helium is less dense than any other known gas except hydrogen and is about one seventh as dense as air
  • Color : Colorless
  • Odor : It is odorless
  • Viscosity : Extremely low viscosity  (resistance to flow - stickiness)
  • Taste : Tasteless gas
  • Compounds : Helium is completely inert. It does not form compounds or react with any other element

Helium Properties - What are the Chemical Properties of Helium?
What are the Chemical Properties of Helium? They are the characteristics that determine how it will react with other substances or change from one substance to another. The better we know the nature of the substance the better we are able to understand it. Chemical properties are only observable during a chemical reaction. Reactions to substances may be brought about by changes brought about by burning, rusting, heating, exploding, tarnishing etc. The Chemical Properties of Helium are as follows:

  • Chemical Formula : He
  • Reactivity with water : It is less soluble in water than any other gas
  • Toxicity : Non Toxic
  • Flammability : It is non-flammable
