Definition of the Yttrium Element
A silvery metallic element, not a rare earth but occurring in nearly all rare-earth minerals. Yttrium is fairly stable in air, because it is protected by the formation of a stable oxide film on its surface. It oxidizes readily when heated. It reacts with water decomposing it to release Hydrogen gas, and it reacts with mineral acids. It is used in various metallurgical applications, notably to increase the strength of Magnesium and Aluminium alloys. The Atomic Number of this element is 39 and the Element Symbol is Y.
