Definition of the Lawrencium Element
A radioactive transuranic element synthesized from californium. A transuranic element means an element with atoms heavier than those of Uranium with an atomic number greater than 92. Lawrencium does not exist in nature and has very unstable nuclei, so it is are quite hard to make and detect. The Atomic Number of this element is 103 and the Element Symbol is Lr.

Origin / Meaning of the name Lawrencium
Named in honour of Ernest O. Lawrence the inventor of the cyclotron which is a research instrument with which several new elements have been first produced.

Lawrencium was discovered by Albert Ghiorso, Torbjorn Sikkeland, Almon Larsh and Robert M. Latimer in 1961 at the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory (now called Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) in the University of California.
